Professor Ali Ghaffarian is a Senior Academic Strategist, Visionary People Leader, and Champion of Transformational Governance with over two decades of experience in academic leadership, steering sophisticated teams and initiatives across Architecture, Construction, Creative Technologies, and Engineering disciplines.
Academic Leadership and Governance
As Head of the School of Future Environments (SoFE) at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) since January 2026, Professor Ghaffarian leads more than 100 academic and professional staff across the departments of Architecture and Built Environment Engineering and the School office, with full responsibility for a multi-million dollar annual operating budget.
His resource reforms, covering staff to student ratio rationalisation, cost efficiency modelling and the reallocation of specialist capability, were developed while he led Built Environment Engineering (2020 to 2026) and then applied across the School. They have supported continuity of teaching quality and staff wellbeing through a period of portfolio change that included the discontinuation of the Creative Technology programmes.
He bases decisions on curriculum renewal, programme integration and the place of digital transformation and sustainability in teaching and research on evidence, and he has led these changes in both of his line leadership roles at AUT.
He has introduced workload allocation and monitoring, transparent performance review, and structured recognition of teaching and service contributions, together with new ways of making team achievements visible within and beyond AUT. In 2026 he established a Professional Services Excellence Recognition event with a named award for each of the School’s four professional services teams, first held on 5 October 2026.
