The volume

Edited with Amirhosein Ghaffarianhoseini, Farzad Pour Rahimian and Mohan Purushothaman, the proceedings appear as volume 591 of Springer’s Lecture Notes in Civil Engineering. They record the research presented at SASBE 2024, hosted by the School of Future Environments with CIB W116 in November 2024.

The editorial work

Editing a proceedings volume of this size is a substantial undertaking. About 300 abstracts were received; papers were peer reviewed, revised and selected; and the final 165 were organised into a coherent volume that meets the publisher’s standards. As lead editor, he carried overall responsibility for the volume’s quality and timeliness.

Publication with Springer Nature gives the papers international visibility and indexing, which matters particularly to early career researchers and doctoral students, for whom a recognised proceedings paper can be an important first publication.

Significance

The volume is one of three publication outcomes from SASBE 2024, alongside the ITcon special issue he guest edited and the special issue of Smart and Sustainable Built Environment. Together they turn a three day conference in Auckland into a lasting body of scholarship, and they established the publishing model later extended with Springer Nature for the five volume GDI 2025 proceedings.

The editor’s responsibility

A proceedings volume is often the first published record of new research. For the scientific community it is a snapshot of the field at a given moment; for authors it is a citable output that can lead to journal articles and collaborations. The lead editor stands behind the volume as a whole, and its quality reflects on the conference, the host institution and the series.
